Pi-Hole Network-Wide Ad Blocker on a PogoPlug Linux Box

Description

• Pi-hole is an open source Linux network-level ad and tracker blocking application which acts as a DNS sinkhole and optionally a DHCP server for home networks.
• Pi-hole protects your devices from ads by preventing devices from connecting to the servers that host these ads and trackers. Because it's done at the network (DNS) level, no client-side software is needed on any of your devices.
• The Pogoplug V4 A1-01 is an embedded Linux device with an 800MHz ARM processor, an SD card slot, a USB port, and a Gigabit Ethernet port. Cloud Engines, the maker of the PogoPlug device, is no longer in business, so the PogoPlug no longer functions as a cloud backup, but the device makes a great Linux box.
• IMPORTANT NOTE: Pi-Hole does not block Youtube in-video ads. See description below for more info.

WHAT YOU GET:


A new Pogo-V4-A1-01 device which has been updated to run Debian Linux version 12. Firmware on the device has been modified to allow it to load Debian Linux from an SD card. You will have full root access to Debian Linux on the device (see photos) One new 16GB class 10 microSD card (+ SD adapter), rated 80 MB/s, with Debian Linux 12.12 and pi-hole software installed.

INSTALLATION:


Plug the Ethernet cable into your router and plug in the PogoPlug power adapter. After the PogoPlug boots up (about 2 min), find the IP address of the PogoPlug. Most routers allow you to see IP addresses of devices on the network. The device name will be "pihole". Point your router DNS setting (typically found in the DHCP section of your router configuration) to the PogoPlug IP.

Support is via email for 90 days (and my previous customers would tell you it is much longer than that).



IMPORTANT NOTES:


The pi-hole project no longer pre-compiles pi-hole (version 6) for Pogoplug's armel processor, so I have manually compiled it using their same source code. It is tested and working perfectly, including the ability to upgrade pihole components using the normal "pihole -up" command.. If you instead want the final Version 5 software (5.18.4), please message me. Otherwise I will ship Version 6. Because Youtube (Google) uses the same DNS names for both videos and streamed ads, you will most likely NOT be able to block in-video ads without also affecting the video.
